Dr. Alexa T. McCray

Alexa T. McCray is the founder and project director of Community Connect to Research. She draws on more than 20 years of experience in the field of Biomedical Informatics. Earlier in her career, while at the National Institutes of Health, the nation's leading medical research center, Dr. McCray designed and directed the development of ClinicalTrials.gov. ClinicalTrials.gov is a publicly available database that provides current information on clinical research studies being conducted across the U.S. and internationally. Community Connect to Research is a natural extension of Dr. McCray's commitment to that project and her desire to provide patients and families with relevant information about health and research. She believes strongly that people who are ill, or have a family member who is suffering from a serious condition, need to have access to high-quality health information that is easy to understand and use in order to make informed health decisions.

Because people are increasingly turning to the Internet for their health information, Dr. McCray founded Community Connect to Research to address the need for a high-quality computer-based resource that is openly available to anyone. She is dedicated to continually evolving this resource, which brings together easily understandable, scientifically sound information about health topics and health research, and trustworthy health resources in Massachusetts. Dr. McCray and her project team strive to make this resource useful by keeping the main audience—patients and their families—in mind at all times.

Dr. McCray is also Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Department of Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, as well as the Co-Director of the Center for Biomedical Informatics (CBMI) and the Associate Director of the Countway Library of Medicine. In these positions, she is a devoted advocate for open access to academic research as well as health information for the public.
